How he’s not a head coach right now is the NFL’s loss and the Bengals’ gain. After the 2021 season, most Cincinnati Bengals fans figured defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo would be packing his bags and heading to another city to be an NFL head coach.
It didn’t happen then, or after the 2022 season, when again, Bengals fans were waiting for the news that the team would be looking to restock their coaching ranks.
Somehow, Anarumo is still the Bengals defensive coordinator, which is good for Cincinnati and bad for the teams on the Bengals’ schedule this season. Anarumo came to Cincinnati before the 2019 season when head coach Zac Taylor was hired. In that time, the Bengals have added big-name free agents like DJ Reader, B.J. Hill, Chidobe Awuzie, Mike Hilton, Trey Hendrickson, and Vonn Bell. They allowed the sixth least points scored per game in 2022, and are poised for another solid defensive season under Anarumo’s direction.

That’s me every morning. I just want football to be back. I know you do too. Training camp begins soon(ish), and, below are some of the Cincinnati Bengals’ position battles we could see heading into the preseason.
Right Tackle:
Contenders: Jonah Williams, La’el Collins, Jackson Carman
Williams was moved to right tackle after the Bengals signed Orlando Brown Jr. in free agency to be the team’s new blind-side protector at left tackle. Williams likely has the upper hand on the position right now because of his experience in the NFL and because Collins is still battling back from a torn ACL he had surgically repaired late last season, which will likely land him on the PUP list when the season starts.

His success was cut short in 2021 when Smith went down with a meniscus injury and missed the season.

Daniel Jeremiah took Patrick Mahomes at number one after winning his second Super Bowl this past season. Coming in at number two is Joe Burrow, according to Bucky Brooks.
Brooks stated: “It has nothing to do with the talent. It has all to do with the composure, the confidence, and the swagger that he has infused into the Cincinnati Bengals since he stepped onto the scene.”
Brooks continued his breakdown of Burrow, saying, “There are a couple of different types of leaders, and he is what we call a thermostat leader. The temperature changes in the room when he walks in. His ability to play point guard in a fast-break offense makes this team dangerous. Burrow to me is right behind Pat Mahomes because he has everything you look for in the position.”

Set to turn 29 in November, Boyd has finished every season since 2018 with a Pro Football Focus score of at least 71.1. The 2016 second-round pick out of Pitt is easily one of the NFL’s best slot wideouts and will probably remain such for at least a few more seasons.

While the Bengals would obviously love to keep Boyd, don’t expect it to happen. Not if the Bengals get their way and sign Tee Higgins to a major contract extension this year, then turn around and do the same for Ja’Marr Chase next year when he becomes extension eligible.
