The annual East-West Shrine Bowl was cancelled during the season due to COVID-19. To make up for it, the selected players that would’ve played in the game will participate in virtual training sessions in preparation for the NFL Draft.
Per the Shrine Bowl’s Twitter account, four assistant coaches for the Cincinnati Bengals will be a part the virtual programs this year. The four assistants being:
Brad Kragthorpe, offensive assistant
Jordan Kovacs, defensive quality control
Ben Martin, assistant offensive line coach

It is a move that many Fans would love to see as well. Everyone knows that the Bengals’ offensive line has to get better this offseason. It was painfully obvious that this past season the protection wasn’t there to keep quarterback Joe Burrow upright. It also was a terrible season rushing the football as well, which only made things harder on a young quarterback.
Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus has a simple suggestion to help jumpstart that process for the Bengals this offseason. In a piece where he suggested one free agent for every team, he has the Bengals going after the best offensive lineman in this free agency class, Joe Thuney.
Thuney has allowed just three sacks in the past three years, posting PFF pass-blocking grades of at least 85.0 in two of those three seasons. He is also a good run blocker and doesn’t get penalized often. He would represent a monster upgrade along Cincinnati’s offensive line.

Well-deserved honors for two of the Bengals’ leaders. The Cincinnati Chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America have named Jessie Bates III as the Bengals’ 2020 MVP, while Giovani Bernard was the organization’s annual “Good Guy” award.
This marks the first MVP for Bates, in his third season out of Wake Forest. Bates finished as the top graded safety in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, and led their stats in total interceptions plus passes defensed.
“Bates was a runaway winner, putting together one of the most impressive Bengals seasons by an individual defensive player in recent years,” said Cincinnati Chapter President Paul Dehner Jr. “His playmaking was one of the primary weapons for the defense and helped hold together a side of the ball battling injuries all around him all season.”
Other past MVP winners have been QB Jon Kitna (2002-03), HB Rudi Johnson (’04), QB Carson Palmer (’05), OT Willie Anderson Collapse

John and Anthony run through the recent slate of Bengals news, including the hirings and impacts of a couple of new assistant coaches. They also have a back-and-forth in the “State Your Case” segment and engage in their first mock draft of the 2021 offseason. The Wild Card round of the playoffs has just been completed and it showcased just how strong the AFC is—particularly in the North division. Two of the Bengals’ rivals moved on to the Divisional Round, as Cincinnati continues to heal up and rebuild for the 2021 season.
Part of that process is in the hiring of some assistant coaches under Zac Taylor. The Bengals engaged in that endeavor over the past week, including the bringing back of one well-liked former assistant in Frank Pollack.
John and Anthony discuss those moves and Joe Burrow’s recent meeting with the media. The duo also argues the merits of particularly strategies in the upcoming draft and the No. 5 Collapse

Cincinnati completed the first step of a very important process, but the work is far from over. Among available options, the Cincinnati Bengals couldn’t have hired a better offensive line coach than Frank Pollack. The universal praise they’re receiving for rehiring Pollack combined with his already well-known track record speaks for itself.
But as Matt Minich pointed out in his latest film review of Pollack’s blocking scheme, a coaching change can’t be the only true change at that position group.
In 2018, Pollack’s first and only season with the Bengals, the offensive line was almost completely redone from the previous year. Cordy Glenn was traded for to start at left tackle, Billy Price was drafted to start at center, and Bobby Hart was signed as a low-cost free agent and emerged as the “best” right tackle battle like Alex Redmond did at right guard. Clint Boling was the only returning starter at left guard.

This is obviously an important milestone in Burrow’s recovery. The 24-year old mentioned that his knee is at about 15% right now, so any throwing he’ll do within the next month or so won’t be very extraneous. He also mentioned he’ll start to run again in that same phase of his recovery process.

Volume stats are overrated anyways. Three quarterbacks were taken in the first six picks of the 2020 NFL Draft, and all three of them had very unique rookie seasons.
For the Bengals, first-overall pick Joe Burrow showed why he was hyped up as the most pro-ready passer in years, but a season-ending knee injury in Week 11 put a damper on his year. Nevertheless, he displayed flashes of brilliance as the only Week 1 starter between him, Tua Tagovailoa of the Dolphins, and Justin Herbert of the Chargers.
Tagovailoa’s first year in Miami left a lot to be desired, but Herbert surprised everybody with one of the better statistical rookie quarterback seasons in recent memory. His 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns make him the overwhelming favorite to earn NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

The Bengals may look to add a familiar target for Joe Burrow in theis year’s draft if things fall a certain way. The Bengals hold the fifth-overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, which is a pretty advantageous spot to be in considering they don’t need to draft a quarterback.
There seems to be three prospects that could fall to the Bengals and instantly improve their offense. One of them just happens to be one of Joe Burrow’s favorite targets from his historic 2019 season, wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Burrow shared his thoughts on his former teammate and what made their connection so special.
“Ja’Marr is a really good player,” Burrow told reporters Tuesday. “It’s pretty easy to throw it to him when he has five yards of separation every snap. He’s an exciting player and a great guy and a friend as well. He was fun to play with.”
When asked if he would be open to reunion Burrow smirked and offered a short reply.

Carson Palmer sadly knows a thing or two about being a Bengal and having to undergo reconstructive knee surgery. The Cincinnati Bengals fanbase has been through the heartbreak of losing a phenomenal quarterback to an injury before, and while Carson Palmer’s was later in his career, it was similar to 2020 No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow’s injury that crushed the spirit of every fan.
Burrow went down against the Washington Football Team in Week 11. It was destined to happen at some point as the Bengals had been allowing Burrow to just get smothered in the pocket for most of the season.
That said, Burrow is on the path to rehab. He’s walking and seemingly on track to play at the start of next season. While that’s still up in the air, one thing isn’t and that is that Joe Burrow will bounce back.
